About Sylvia

A tech career. Three kids. One question every parent is asking.

I spent my career inside the technology industry, leading teams and building revenue across the Asia Pacific at Google, Salesforce and Stripe. I have watched every major platform shift of the last twenty years from the inside.

None of them prepared me for the moment one of my own children said thank you to a smart speaker that had just confidently told them something wrong.

I am raising three kids in the middle of the biggest change to childhood since the smartphone. Like you, I do not have the option of waiting to see how it turns out. So I did what I know how to do: went deep on the evidence, tested everything at my own kitchen table, and built the practical system I could not find anywhere else. Practical details, answered

What do we need on the night?: A hall or hub space, a screen and HDMI, one microphone for rooms over 60. Everything else travels with me.
Timing: Parent evenings run 6:30 or 7:00 start, 60 minutes on the clock: 45 minutes of content, 15 minutes for questions and close, deliberately, because evenings that run long lose the room. The full depth of every topic goes home in the toolkit the next morning.
Numbers: Sessions work from 20 parents to 400. Under 20, ask about the webinar format.
Payment: Invoice to the school or P&C, 50 percent on booking, balance after delivery. P&C and P&F bookings welcome.
Cancellation: Full refund at 14 days notice, one free date change inside that.
How much notice do you need?: Four to six weeks is ideal, enough time to promote the evening to families and run the pre event survey. Shorter is sometimes possible, ask.
Will it be recorded?: No full recording of school evenings, deliberately: recordings reduce attendance and mute the honest questions that make the night valuable. Every family that attends receives the complete take home toolkit by email within 48 hours, so nobody leaves empty handed.
Can students attend?: School evenings are for parents and carers only, also deliberately: parents ask more honest questions about their teenagers when their teenagers are not in the room. Student sessions are a separate program, ask about availability.
We are a K to 12 college. Which evening do we book?: Both, ideally in the same week. The primary and secondary sessions are genuinely different, and running the pair positions the college as leading on this for every family. Both evenings in the same week: $2,499 + GST, saving $499 on separate bookings.
Will the session align with our school's AI policy?: Yes, and this matters. Send your AI and assessment policy with the booking and the session references it rather than contradicting it. Nothing presented will undermine a rule your school has set.
Can the P&C sell tickets to cover the cost?: Absolutely. Many communities run it free, some charge a small ticket price or run it as a fundraiser. Your call entirely.
Can we share the evening with a neighbouring school?: Yes, co hosted evenings work well and split the investment. One hall, two communities, shared cost.
What happens to our parents' survey responses?: They shape the session and are shared back to the school as themes only, never as identifiable responses, never used for anything else.
Are you encouraging students to use AI for homework?: The opposite, and this matters. The tutor parents build in the session is configured to refuse final answers: it hints, quizzes, and waits. Most students have already found unguided AI; the session replaces that with the guardrailed version, and assessment integrity gets its own segment, aligned with NESA requirements and your school's policy.
My partner works in tech. Will this be too basic?: No, and this matters to us. Sessions carry the current research with its caveats stated, live demonstrations rather than slides, and configuration most tech professionals have never done for their own kids. The pre event survey also tells us the room's sophistication before we walk in, so the depth is set by your community, not a generic average. Tech heavy workplaces book a dedicated advanced version.
Isn't this just more screen time?: No, and we take this head on in every session. Screen time counts the minutes; nobody is counting the direction. An hour being quizzed by a tutor the family configured is not the same hour as one spent being flattered by a companion app, even though a screen counter records them identically. The program teaches families to control the direction, and much of the homework is not on a screen at all: a dinner conversation, family rules, a parent thinking out loud.
